What to do after a stroke?

“After a long day at work, I layed on my bed to read as usual. Not noticing anything different I fell asleep, but, when I woke up my life changed. I found a version of myself that I didn´t know of”.

The Cerebral Vascular Event (better know as stroke) is one of the main causes of disability in the elderly with an increase of risk among young people in Mexico and the world.

But, why does it happen? This ocurrs due to failure in the cerebral vascular system that can be occluded or ruptured, causing neurological symptoms that can be transitory or permanent.

Surviving this process is just the first victory of many battles which will come along the way since as we mentioned earlier disability is the main sequel.
It is inevitable to get away intact after an injury to an organ as important as the brain, that is because inside of it’s funcitions we can find the control of the movement which makes us independent people.

And so, what should you do after a stroke? First, it is important to understand that the brain begins a repair process in which it needs different elements that must be addressed from a physical, psychological, and familiar perspective.

What should be the second step?
Physiotherapy

As we have told you through: therapeutic exercise , electrotherapy, among other tecniques, are responsible for connecting the brain with voluntary movements. That connection becomes visible when you achieve independent actions such as standing, walking, dressing, cooking by yourself.

Such is its importance since it evaluates the current physical state, and from this we can create strategies to reach a common objective and like any activity that you want to learn, practice and perseverance will be the way to achieve it. By this we mean that the sooner your start your rehabilitation the sooner you will begin to recover what you´ve lost.

And what role do emotions play? Your emotions during this process are extremely important because the changes that you will present on a physical level have an impact not only on you, but your family as well. Psychotherapy can guide you in the process, help you to be resilient.
